Discover Revolutionary Jewellery At Design Museum of Barcelona
Hosted by the famous Museu del Disseny de Barcelona, Women Jewellers (1965-1990). Between Art and Design is an exhibition which features the first female jewellers working in Barcleona from the start of the final third of the 20th century. Celebrating not just good design, but also a revolutionary era in women empowerment, the exhibition will showcase 145 pieces from the aforementioned era. Ángeles López-Antei. Brooch. Barcelona, 1986. Photo: Lluís Ros Between 1965 and 1990, Barcelona and the rest of the world celebrated the golden era for contemporary jewellery. This was an international phenomenon which was known as the neue Schmuck or new jewellery which valued creativity of the designs above the traditional rich materials. This significant era came to be known for its artistic expression and experimentation within the space and opened up paths between art and design, a discipline that was only just beginning.
There are multiple aspects that defined 1960s jewellery transformation, including creation of schools devoted to jewellery, associations of jewellers who were interested in the creative design aspect and emergence of art galleries dedicated to jewellery. However, the biggest transformation was in the form of women joining the industry. It was a marker for women empowerment during the era because despite Catalonia's great jewellery tradition, there weren't any female jewellers in the region.

When visiting, prepare to be blown away by the representative select of jewellery by Montserrat Guardiola, Carmen Zulueta, Teresa Capella, Anna Font, Teresa Casanovas, Chelo Sastre, Margarita Kirchner, Ángeles López Antei, Marta Breis and Núria Matabosch, ten women preceded by two pioneers, Mariona Lluch and Ninon Collett, a Swiss-born artist based in Barcelona who is considered Catalonia’s first female jeweller.
