Every year, the month of February brings with it an overwhelming sense of love. 14th February is no longer just a day of romance meant to be celebrated with your significant other, it’s a period to show everyone who is important to you, from your parents to friends to even yourself, just how much you care about them–mostly through unique presents. If you’ve ever wondered about how the universal holiday came to be, we AiSPi-ed a little history for you.
Roses are red, presents are timeless
The Origins
It turns out, no one really knows the true history behind this holiday. Historians everywhere have argued about the exact traditions from which this holiday takes inspiration.
But there is a murky history of Valentine’s Day which goes way back, to a period where this day was known for all things unromantic. The most commonly believed theory is this—the day has been named after Saint Valentine. It is said that he wrote the first ‘valentine’ greeting to a young girl he fell in love with, for which he was imprisoned. According to The History Channel, before his death, he wrote her a letter signed “From your Valentine,” which remains a commonly used phrase to this day.
Some believe that the day was named after two men, both named St. Valentines, who were executed on 14th February. Known to be martyrs, the Catholic Church may have established the day to honour the men. One of the men, Saint Valentine of Terni, had been secretly officiating weddings for Roman soldiers against the wishes of the emperor, making him a beacon of love.
