Much like floral for spring, knitwear for the winter season isn’t generally considered groundbreaking. For the past few years, knits have been a key wardrobe component–from oversized sweaters to large button-down cardigans. But this time, there’s a new knitwear story to follow. Spotted on the AW21 runway, the trend just got a lot more comfortable and elegant at the same time.
As winter rolls around, this time the knits are cosier, chicer and over the top. From maxis to crop tops to accessories, there’s no one way to wear this cosy trend this cold season.
Wrap up in warm
knits
If you’ve grown comfy living in sweaters and shorts, matching knitted separates are the next best thing that don’t require a second thought.
Bold, all over knits are the answer to your winter wardrobe
The runway knits
From stylish menswear to must-have womenswear, one of the most-spotted trends was cozy knits at the Autumn-Winter 2021 shows. Showing head-to-toe, tight-knit dresses and matching separates were high-fashion designers such as Fendi, The Row and Proenza Schouler. Missoni, Gabriela Hearst and Chloé had a collection full of comfortable yet chic ponchos, capes and shawls that were revamped for the new season. Meanwhile, designers like Jonathan Sikkim and Veronica Beard designed looks that changed these comfy favourites into this season’s sharpest silhouettes like polo dresses, off-the-shoulder tops and cropped vests.
From soft tonal shades to pops of bright hues, there were a spectrum of colours visible in knitwear on the catwalk. Alongside it, craftwork techniques introduced new patterns, fringing, embellishments and appliqué-work that made these winter essentials into works of art.
Owning the trend this season
We all know that the joy of wrapping yourself in luxurious cashmere is irreplaceable. While you may already own some comfy pieces, updating your winter wardrobe is always a great idea.
